It was a sad day when this title was released for the Dreamcast. Sad because, although a great game, the machine itself was almost dead. We all k it. Sega k it. And the game did indeed turn out to be one of the last released for the console. It's nice to know then that, through Sega's recent adoption of a multi-platform strategy, the spirit of the DC can live on with PS2 releases such as Virtua Tennis 2. Continuing its predecessor's trend for pure playability and accessibility, Virtua Tennis 2 picks up where the first one left off, offering a few features and a revised control method. This control method is a lot more responsive and gives greater control when placing the ball. On top of that, there's the addition of a slice button, lob shots can be charged, and there are more possibilities when serving. World Tour mode offers a 'create-a-player' option, which allows players to design a virtual version of themselves (or anyone else for that matter) before training them up. A host of mini games are available that help to hone your techniques, build up skill levels and also unlock secret items. Of course Virtua Tennis would be nothing without a multiplayer mode and this version certainly doesn't disappoint. With the aid of a Multitap, up to four players can take part in a frenzied game of doubles/mixed doubles, which is something that everyone must try. Failing that, there's still an excellent two-player mode if you don't have a multi-tap. Virtua Tennis has long been recognised as being extremely easy to pick up and play, yet offering a great amount of depth to those who stick it out. Nothing has changed with this release, except the fact that the game has improved and it's now available to PS2 owners.
