The story begins in October 1940 as young mum Lois (Julia Brown) is now an ambulance driver. Harry (Jonah Hauer-King), a Special Operations Executive and the father of Lois's baby, takes his Polish wife Kasia (Zofia Wichlacz) to meet his stern mother Robina (Lesley Manville). Away from Manchester, a German couple discover their daughter has been chosen for Lebensborn, an initiative set up by Himmler to increase the number of children who meet Nazi ideas of racial purity, and in North Africa, Indian Sappers are bullied by British troops into minesweeping.
