Over the years the stealthy Assassin's Creed games have ballooned into big, action-oriented open world RPGs. No-one's really complaining about that - they've all been blockbuster hits - but Mirage brings things back towards the original stealth-'em-up formula. Set in 9th century Baghdad, the game follows Basim (who you might remember from Assassin's Creed Valhalla) who joins the Hidden Ones after his street family of young orphans is murdered thanks to an attempt to steal a mysterious artefact going wrong. You'll rise through the ranks of the Hidden Ones as you murder your way around an unstable Baghdad. The action is focused on this one city, which makes for a much tighter narrative than other recent games in the series. Everything's that bit easier to keep on top of, which makes it more satisfying to boot. Another effect of this tighter focus is that the city feels very alive. There are secrets to uncover without a quest marker in sight and plenty of freelance contracts to take on if you want to earn tokens to spend. While you can take down more than one enemy at once, the action bends towards a more stealthy, strategic approach. You'll get the best results by carefully casing our a building, using your pet eagle to mark out enemies and spot useful resources, then building a strategy to work your way in. This is, in many ways, a return to the roots of the Assassin's Creed series, but it brings all the best bits of more recent entries with it.
