Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick star in this black comedy directed by Alexander Payne. Tracy Flick (Witherspoon) is an overachiever who is determined to become the student body president at Carver High School. Her social studies teacher Jim McAllister (Broderick) dislikes her and so he convinces popular football player Paul Metzler (Chris Klein) to run against her. However, thanks to this intervention and Tracy's boundless ambition, the election soon turns into a nightmare with consequences that extend far beyond high school.
