Saiva (Michelle Yeoh) is a woman who has lived her life under a curse put upon her at birth. She and Anja (Michelle Krusiec), her beautiful adopted daughter, are the sole survivors of an indigenous tribe of reindeer herders slaughtered by a troop of marauding soldiers, and they struggle to survive on the scarce prey they can kill. When Saiva finds an injured and starving soldier, Loki (Sean Bean), who is also on the run from the marauding band, she takes him in and the two women nurse him back to health as the long winter nights draw in. But when Loki and Anja grow close and start to fall in love, devastating consequences lie in store for all three.
