The feature follows two men, Lance (Hirsch) and his sister's boyfriend Alvin (Rudd), during a summer they spend working together repairing stretches of Texan road following a devastating forest fire. Due to the remote location of the roads on which they work, the pair have no company other than each other and the fire-scarred surroundings for days and sometimes weeks at a time. Though far from the best of friends initially, the need for companionship leads to a growing bond between the two men as they share tales from their past and their hopes for the future. Post-rock band Explosions in the Sky provide the soundtrack.
