"Chapter and Verse" består av 18 låtar varav 5 tidigare outgivna. Springsteen valde låtar som reflekterar teman i Born To Run-boken och börjar med två låtar från The Castiles, med en ung Springsteen på gitarr och sång, och avslutas med 2012-års "Wrecking Ball". Låtarna skildrar Springsteens musikaliska historia från dess tidigaste dagar och berättar en parallell historia med boken.

Med i samlingen finns inspelningar från Steel Mill och The Bruce Springsteen Band med musiker som sedan skulle gå vidare till The E Street Band, samt Springsteens första demoversioner av "Henry Boy" och "Growin' Up" från 1972 - strax innan Springsteen började spela in debutalbumet "Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.".
