This detective story is a dramatized play with the detective industry. The main story is about how some typical male detectives from the detective world come together and end up in an adventure they hadn't quite planned. But it also deals with two women's relationship to this detective world, one from an intellectual perspective as a researcher and the other from a practical perspective as married to a detective. Thus, the detective industry is used as a starting point for a discussion about the relationship between man and woman, what is usually called our time's gender order.
Based on this, the book follows a long tradition within the detective genre, from Stieg Trenter to many contemporary detective writers, where the books also constitute a form of contemporary social criticism. Most often, however, this criticism is only a backdrop for the actual crime drama. In this book, this side of the detective book is moved more into the center of the plot. In this way, the book becomes a detective story combined with a certain amount of popular science and thus a different detective story than what we are used to.
To reinforce the proximity to detective literature, the events take place in three well-known detective environments: Stockholm, Venice, and Scotland, places that are also well known to the author.
The book also mixes reality and fiction in a special way. The book's subtitle, A detective story about the detective industry, is ambiguous because the word detective can mean both a real professional group, i.e., detectives, but also a literary genre. This slippage between two worlds becomes especially clear when our three detectives at the end of the story find detective books where they themselves are actually the fictional main characters.
After reading the book, one can also understand that there is a certain point in letting the author's name be a female pseudonym.
