Sweden is one of Europe's most segregated countries. People of different ethnicities and backgrounds do not know each other - because they do not even meet. Segregation as well as integration are challenges also in congregations. In the research project that forms the basis of this book, Joseph Sverker and Magnus Sternegård, together with drama pedagogue Sara Berg, have worked with young people with foreign backgrounds to increase their participation in congregations and society. They have also interviewed leaders and pastors in diverse congregations on issues of integration, youth and diversity.

Young people are often appreciated for their presence in the congregation, but Sverker and Sternegård show that recognition and participation require more than that. Working with youth participation and recognition in congregations with many cultures and languages raises questions about the view of the church, leadership and also what salvation means. Questions of integration thus reach the very core of the Christian faith, as it ultimately concerns reconciliation.

To recognize each other: Diversity, integration and youth participation in congregations and society shows what the recognition of young people in diverse congregations can mean for a congregation and society practically and theologically. The book also presents Third Space as a process-based method for working with issues of differences and reconciliation in a congregation.
