Norway was one of the pioneers in the European program for the purchase and co-production of F-16 aircraft. As early as July 21, 1975, together with Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark, it signed an agreement for the purchase of modern multi-role fighters. The choice fell on the American F-16 Fighting Falcon project, which revolutionized modern aviation with its maneuverability, modern avionics, and relatively low operating costs.

Norwegian F-16s stood out from other aircraft of this type with their light gray paint scheme, the flag of Norway on the tail, and a unique numbering system, linked to American numbers. The short and snowy Norwegian runways, which are often located in dispersed areas, forced their F-16s to be equipped with braking parachutes to cope in situations where conventional wheel brakes could not be used.
For over four decades of service, Norwegian F-16s participated in many key international operations under NATO auspices, including in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Libya, and patrolling the airspace of the Baltic countries as part of NATO Baltic Air Policing.
