Defenders of the Faith oli alun perin Christofer Johnssonin (Therion) sooloprojekti, jossa hän toteuttaisi lapsuudenunelmansa puhtaan 80-luvun heavy metal -albumin tekemisestä, mutta se on kehittynyt Therionin sivuprojektiksi. Albumi on musiikillinen kunnianosoitus niille bändeille, jotka muovasivat nuoren Christoferin mieltä, muun muassa Accept, Judas Priest, Scorpions ja Iron Maiden.
