At 81 years old, Erling Eidem officiated the first televised funeral in Sweden, Dag Hammarskjöld's burial in Uppsala. Eidem thus went directly into living rooms around the world.

But he was a controversial man and had been portrayed as both a Nazi and an anti-Semite. He himself gladly emphasized his inadequacy and described his outlook on life as serving. Another image was spread by the author Göran Tunström in the novel Prästungen: a small man who gladly held open the doors with a gentle smile. Eidem was archbishop from 1932 to 1950, but he was always a biblical scholar. He became increasingly a mystic over the years.

Here, his life and work are depicted from an existential perspective, as the existential was for him identical with the personal. He was born Erling Andersson in 1880 in Gothenburg, studied in Lund, Heidelberg, Berlin, and Jena, among other places.

Anders Jarlert is professor emeritus in Lund, a priest, and author of a number of books within his field of interest. Resides in Gothenburg.
